Catharsis
Catharsis is one of the central concepts in philosophy and art.
The word comes from the ancient Greek katharsis, meaning “purification” or “cleansing.”
The term was first articulated by Aristotle,
who believed that true art leads the viewer through deep emotional experience
and toward a state of inner release and clarity.
Importantly, catharsis is not the emotion itself,
but what remains after the emotion has been fully lived through.
It is neither pain nor joy,
but the moment when feelings are completed
and no longer weigh on the soul.
In painting, catharsis is expressed not through action,
but through state of being.
The closed eyes of the figure symbolize an inward gaze —
she is no longer responding to the outer world,
but dwelling within the experience,
at the point of completion and acceptance.
Butterflies are an ancient symbol of the soul and transformation.
Across cultures, they represent transition, change of form,
and liberation from a previous state.
Here, they are not in flight,
but exist as an energy that has already passed through transformation.
The layered structure, circles, and ornamental elements
echo traces of emotions and lived experience —
not erased, but integrated into the inner landscape of the self.
This work speaks of a quiet catharsis:
a moment when inner conflict dissolves
and a sense of wholeness emerges.
